Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP as it is often known, is a methodology based around communication, personal development, and psychotherapy. NLP techniques created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder leverage the connection between neurological processes, language and behavioral patterns.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is like a user’s manual for the brain, and the study of excellent communication–both with yourself, and with others. NLP techniques offer a set of tools and techniques along with an attitude and a methodology of knowing how to achieve your goals and get results.

Learning NLP or taking NLP training is like learning how to become fluent in the language of your mind. Additional uses for NLP include treatment of phobias and anxiety disorders and improvement of workplace performance or personal happiness.

Derived from the earlier work of Milton Erickson (founder of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis), Virginia Satir (internationally renowned family therapist) and Fritz Perls (the creator of gestalt therapy), Bandler and Grinder claim that their methodology, termed modeling, was able to provide a structural basis for the therapeutic “magic” performed in therapy by Perls, Satir and Erickson.

Based on their modeling of Virginia Satir, Bandler and Grinder produced what they termed the Meta-Model, as a process for gathering information and challenging a person’s language and underlying thinking.

The Bandler and Grinder Milton-Model, purportedly based on the hypnotic language of Milton Erickson, described by them as “artfully vague” and metaphoric, can be used in conjunction with the Meta-Model to induce “trance” and deliver indirect therapeutic suggestion.

NLP is suitable for business professionals, teachers, salespeople, counsellors and therapists. Through the years some very powerful NLP tools and skills have been developed for communication and change in a wide range of areas including psychotherapy, counseling, health, parenting, education, law, creativity, sales, management and leadership.

Quite simply, NLP can be used to facilitate success in just about any area of life. NLP teaches people how to change or adopt new behaviours as required and to choose mental and physical states of wellbeing.
